Pet Insurance

Pet insurance policies are very similar to their health and auto insurance counterparts. Customers can choose how much coverage they want to form their policy, adjust their deductible, and ultimately decide on what their monthly premium will be.

Most pet insurance providers offer a few streamlined plans that most customers will fall into. It’s important to understand your pet’s medical history and identify potential hereditary issues that may require additional coverage.

When you purchase a pet insurance policy, there may be a waiting period. Waiting periods help protect insurance providers from paying for preexisting issues and fraudulent claims.

Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual is a nationally recognized insurance provider that is well known for its auto, home, and life policies. It also offers some of the best pet insurance policies on the market, which the United States Fire Insurance Company underwrites, and they are also affiliates of Hartville Pet Insurance.

Pet insurance provided by Liberty Mutual is generally rated very favorably; however, if you want to purchase a pet insurance policy from them, you need to be an existing Liberty Mutual customer.

Other unique benefits included with Liberty Mutual policies include no upper age limits for pets and an extensive list of wellness add-ons which include supplements and specialty food.

Accident

The Liberty Mutual Accident plan only covers the most severe treatments and does not offer much additional wellness and daily life support.

The key features for the accident plan include:

  • Accidental injuries (including to permanent teeth)
  • Euthanasia or anesthesia due to an accident
  • Cremation and burial expenses due to an accident
  • Ingestion of a foreign object (up to two treatments max per policy year)
  • Accidental death

This plan may be best suited to families who are comfortable paying for wellness expenses out of pocket and want to ensure the most expensive treatments are covered.

Accident & Illness

The Accident and Illness plan is Liberty Mutual’s most popular plan, and it includes everything that the Accident Plan covers plus additional coverage for commons illnesses and issues, including:

  • Illnesses (e.g., cancer, influenza, and kennel cough)
  • Alternative medicine
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions

Pets with known hereditary issues such as hip dysplasia can require expensive, ongoing treatment, so this plan may be an excellent choice if you foresee the potential for hereditary problems.

Families who travel often will also enjoy the more comprehensive nature of medicine and therapies provided by the Accident and Illness Plan in case their pet contracts an illness while they are away.

Accident, Illness, & Wellness

Liberty Mutual’s most comprehensive plan is the Accident, Illness, and Wellness Plan. This plan includes everything from the lower-tier plans, plus coverage for most wellness expenses which can include:

  • Wellness exams
  • Intestinal deworming
  • Routine dental cleaning
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Flea and tick prevention
    Heartworm tests and medication
  • Dietary food and supplements
  • Prescription medications
  • Boosters and vaccinations

Pets who may require substantial medical treatment or are more expensive breeds may benefit from this plan because it mitigates many niche costs that can quickly become very expensive.

Pricing and Deductibles

Pricing ranges for pet insurance, but the average monthly premium for a dog policy is $48 while it is $19 for cats. Liberty Mutual offers a wide range of coverage, so it is easy to tailor a policy that fits your budget.

Likewise, you get to choose your deductible, so if you want a lower monthly premium, you should choose a higher deductible.

Claims and Limits

Submitting claims through Liberty Mutual is straightforward. You will pay the vet bill upfront, and Liberty Mutual will reimburse you. You have the choice between 70%, 80%, and 90% reimbursements which are reflected in your premium – higher reimbursement means a higher premium.

Pet insurance policies generally have stated maximums that you choose which the policy will not pay out over. Liberty Mutual offers limits between $5,000 to unlimited, and the higher the limit you choose will cost more.

Bottom Line

Purchasing pet insurance through Liberty Mutual is easy, and it is a great way to make sure your pet is covered.

Once you make an account online, you can view your policy documents, find a veterinarian, and more. If you are interested in using Liberty Mutual as your pet insurance provider, you must be an existing customer or bundle another policy to receive access to their pet insurance program.
